A migraine is a very common condition nowadays. Funny thing is, some people even consider it as a part of their daily routine – getting a migraine at a certain time of the day. Although it is not considered as a serious condition, it could be very debilitating. Getting a migraine is the middle of a very busy work day, and if you are unlucky enough to not have your migraine medications with you, would really result to a head-clutching, searing, unbearable kind of pain.

We all know that a migraine is a form of severe headache, but do we really know what it is? In this article, we would be discussing in brief where migraines come from, but we would be focusing mainly on migraine medications as the most treatment for this condition. I highly advise you to read on for you will find that the tips and information mentioned here are very useful.

What is a Migraine?

A migraine is, as mentioned earlier, a severe form of your usual headache. However, unlike your headache, a migraine had certain characteristics and symptoms that are only for migraines alone. For some people, they even get what they all call an “aura” or like a sign that tells you that a major migraine is about to come.

What is the Aura of Migraines?

A migraine aura is usually characterized by the following:

  • Blurry vision
  • A blind spot that develops temporarily
  • Seeing bright lights, stars, and/or zigzagging lines
  • Pain in the eye, either in front, around the eye area, or at the back
  • Tunnel vision, or a narrowing of the visual field – almost like going through a tunnel

Once you experience a migraine aura, you can tell for sure that you are going to have a monster headache. In the next paragraph, the symptoms of migraines will be discussed.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Migraines?

Imagine a really, really bad headache. That would be the simplest way to describe a migraine. It is almost mouth-watering in intensity and you would not know whether to hit your head repeatedly or cover it with a pillow, just to get the pain over with. Anyway, the following would be the most common signs and symptoms of a migraine:

  • A throbbing or pulsating sensation in the head
  • Usually affects only one side, but can transfer places
  • Stars slow, like a dull ache, and proceeds to becoming more and more worse as time passes
  • Can last anywhere from 4 to 48 hours
  • Makes one lose his appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting may be exhibited
  • May come with sweating, tingling sensations and weakness
  • May make you sensitive to light and sound
  • May give you problems in concentrating and thinking clearly

If you have ever experienced having a migraine, I’m sure you are nodding your head right now. So, since those are the signs and symptom of a migraine, let us now look into the different migraine medications used to treat the condition.

What are the Most Common Migraine Medications?

Migraine medications are considered to be the foremost option for migraine treatment. There are actually a lot of varieties of medications that are used to treat migraines. These medications differ in their function – whether they are for symptomatic use or for the prevention of occurrence. They are the following:

  • Pain relievers and NSAIDs

Pain reliever and NSAIDs would have to be the most common type of medicine for migraine treatment. People use it to relieve their usual headaches, and stronger versions are used to treat migraines. NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This kind of medication stops the inflammatory process, thus stopping the pain. Drugs under this classification would be Ibuprofens, Acetaminophens, Analgesics, etc.

  • Beta Blockers

I am sure a lot of you are aware that beta blockers are cardiac drugs. These are medications used to lower the blood pressure by slowing down the heart rate. Now, it is also used for migraine treatment. However, it is not yet known how they seem to be curing headaches. It has been suspected that it may be because they decrease the production of prostaglandins, which in turn decreases the pain sensation.

  • Tricyclic Antidepressants

Yes, they are antidepressants, and yes, they are also considered as migraine medications. Tricyclic antidepressants, or TCAs, reduce the pain sensation by raising the levels of endorphins in the body. However, the use of this type of migraine treatment must be closely monitored by your doctor since it has a lot of dangerous side effects when not used properly.

  • Antiserotonins

Antiserotonin medications are also used as migraine medications because they function by reducing the inflammatory process of blood vessels, thus preventing migraines. However, there are very serious side effects to this drug. Although it is one of the most common migraine medications out there, they are being taken under strict supervision of their doctors.

  • Anticonvulsants

These medications have been used for migraine treatment since the 1940s because people though that there is a relationship between migraines and epilepsy. In today’s time, even with numerous researches done, doctors are still not sure how anticonvulsants prevent the onset of migraines. However, doctors are suspecting that the prevention of pain could be due to the effect of anticonvulsants in the neurotransmitters of the brain.

As you can see, there are a lot of migraine medications that you can choose from. However, the choice is not entirely up to you. Your doctor would be presenting you with a lot of choices, and I highly suggest that you listen carefully and ask for the most effective option.
